    Sight Words in Kindergarten

    What are sight words?

Sight words are simple and common words that children learn to read without sounding out the letters, for example: the. When children are able to quickly recognize words this allows for greater reading fluency.

Sight words are a huge component of our kindergarten literacy program. To help our students develop this skill I love using sight word poems. Poems (especially those that rhyme) are easy for young learners to follow and they often feature repeating patterns that help students predict and sound out words. In our classroom, we start a new sight word poem each week and I send every student home with a poem in their sight word duotang. We practice reading the poem each day (sometimes in unison, sometimes independently, etc) and look for other high frequency words. I project the poems onto our SmartBoard so they are easily visible and allow students opportunities to come to the board to spell the word or circle other findings, such as capital letters and punctuation marks.
The poems that I use (shown above) come in two templates. I use the one with the picture box with my JKs and the option with the blank writing lines with my SKs.

CVC Readers for Kindergarten | Booklets for Beginning Readers

How do you teach CVC words?

    1. Identify and practice forming letter sounds
    2. Model reading and spelling CVC words
    3. Students practice spelling and reading CVC (focus on one vowel at a time)
    4. Focus on CVC words in word families
    5. Find and use CVC words in simple sentences

Learning to read and write CVC words is important for emerging readers. It teaches them to blend individual letter sounds together, while using simple predictable patterns (consonant -vowel – consonant). We practice CVC words with these printable and digital CVC readers. Each CVC mini book in this pack also comes with follow up activities and vocabulary pages. The CVC booklets are great for guided group or whole class activities and they use easy to read text that students can decode.
